& Dance Intensive Residency
Gainsville, Florida
January 21, 2003-April 12, 2003 |
A unique intersection
of Makandal's theater and educational interests generated a semester-long
residency for the Troupe at the University of Florida in Gainesville.
Artistic Director Frisner Augustin, choreographer Erol Josue, and
musicologist Lois Wilcken worked with University students to mount
a full-scale production of traditional Vodou music and dance. Both
artists performed with the students on Saturday, April 12, in University
Auditorium. Dr. Wilcken provided an introduction, program notes,
and a question and answer session following the performance.
The Makandal project in Gainesville responded to a call for proposals
from the Center for Latin American Studies at the University, which
organized a three-year project, Religion and Identity in the Americas,
with funding from the Rockefeller Foundation. Themes of the final
year (2002-2003) included the representation of sacred traditions.
Issues of representation of Vodou were thematic through the course
of the project. Dr. Wilcken summed these up in a paper she read
at the program's closing conference.
Frisner Augustin and Erol Josue deserve the highest accolades for
their remarkable creativity. We extend special thanks to Larry Crook,
Joan Frosch, and Sunni Witmer of the Center for World Arts (co-sponsor);
all staff who smoothed the way for us; and the incomparable students
of the University of Florida for making our experience there truly
rich.
*The Gainsville project was funded by The Rockefeller
Foundation
